Paragliding over Alpe di Siusi and Merano

Paragliding in South Tyrol takes full advantage of the broad, gently tilted meadows of the Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm), the largest high-altitude alpine pasture in Europe, and the warm thermals that rise above Merano and the Adige valley. Tandem flights launch from these open slopes, served by cable car, and give passengers a soaring view of the Sciliar (Schlern) plateau, the twin towers of the Sassolungo, and a horizon of Dolomite peaks, in flights that typically last from ten to thirty minutes depending on conditions and the package chosen. The tandem option requires no experience and very little fitness: the passenger simply runs a few steps alongside the pilot at launch, so it suits most able-bodied adults and older children, usually subject to a minimum age of around 5 to 8 with parental consent and to weight limits set by the wing and the day's wind. Experienced pilots wishing to fly solo bring their own equipment and certification, while those wanting to learn can enrol on training courses. For tandem flights the pilot supplies the wing, harness, helmet and reserve parachute, so passengers need only wear closed shoes, long trousers and a warm layer, as it is noticeably cooler aloft. Flights are run by qualified tandem pilots and paragliding schools operating under Italian Aero Club and FIVL accreditation, and each begins with a safety briefing covering the launch run, the seated position and the brace for landing. Pilots carry a reserve parachute and radio, choose launch and landing sites with clear options, and coordinate any emergency through the national number (112). Conditions are best on calm-to-moderate days in summer and early autumn, when thermals over the meadows are reliable but not violent; strong wind and unstable afternoons are avoided, and flights are often timed for the smoother morning or late-afternoon air. Because flying depends entirely on the weather, schools postpone rather than fly in marginal conditions, so booking with flexible dates is wise. The Alpe di Siusi is reached by cable car from Siusi or Ortisei, and Merano 2000 by cable car from Merano, making the launch sites easy to access without a long approach.
