Plan your trip with detailed weather information and seasonal tips for Sicily.

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, renowned for its rich history, stunning coastlines, ancient Greek temples, and vibrant culinary traditions. Today Sicily enchants visitors with its baroque cities, volcanic landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and some of Italy's finest cuisine.

Best Time to Visit

Months to Avoid

January–February

The coldest and wettest months with some rain and temperatures as low as 8–12°C in coastal areas, and snow on Mount Etna. Many smaller beach resort hotels and island ferries operate reduced schedules.

Climate Overview

Sicily enjoys a classic Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The island's position at the heart of the Mediterranean means it receives intense sunshine — over 2,500 hours per year. Summer temperatures regularly reach 35–40°C in the interior, while coastal areas are moderated by sea breezes. The Scirocco — a hot, dry wind from North Africa — can push temperatures even higher for periods in summer. Winters are mild by northern European standards, with most rain falling between November and March.

Seasonal Breakdown

Detailed information for each season.

🌸 Spring

Mar–May

One of the best times to visit Sicily — wildflowers carpet the landscape, ancient sites are uncrowded, and temperatures are pleasantly warm (14–22°C). Ideal for hiking Etna, exploring the Valle dei Templi, and visiting baroque towns. Some mountain passes and rural roads may still be affected by late winter conditions in March.

Tips: Pack light layers for evenings; book accommodation for Easter week well in advance — it's one of Sicily's most celebrated festivals

☀️ Summer

Jun–Aug

Hot, sunny, and crowded — especially July and August when Italians take their own holidays. Coastal resorts, Taormina, and the Aeolian Islands are extremely busy. Temperatures reach 35–40°C inland. The sea is beautifully warm (25–27°C) and swimming conditions are excellent. Etna summit tours continue but heat at lower elevations is intense.

Tips: Start sightseeing early (before 10 AM) to avoid the worst heat; carry water constantly; book all accommodation months in advance for July–August

🍂 Fall

Sep–Nov

Perhaps Sicily's finest season — summer heat fades in September while the sea remains warm enough for swimming (22–25°C). October brings the Etna grape harvest and lower prices. November sees the first rains and cooler temperatures, with fewer tourists but some reduced services. The landscape is golden and beautiful.

Tips: September is arguably the best month for a balanced Sicily trip — warm sea, lower crowds, and excellent food and wine events

❄️ Winter

Dec–Feb

Mild winters by northern European standards (10–15°C coastal) with some rain, especially January–February. Mount Etna above 1,500m often has snow and ski facilities open. Christmas and New Year see some domestic tourism. Most beach resorts are quiet and many smaller hotels close. Palermo, Catania, and Syracuse remain vibrant year-round.

Tips: Winter is excellent for Etna skiing, exploring archaeological sites in solitude, and enjoying Sicilian food and wine without the summer crowds
