Alcantara Gorge Walk

The Alcantara Gorge walk explores one of Sicily's most striking geological sites, near Motta Camastra in the Messina province on the northern flank of Etna. The gorge was carved by the cold Alcantara river into prismatic basalt columns, the legacy of an ancient lava flow that cooled into tall, fluted walls reaching up to around 50m. Access is straightforward: the main Parco Botanico e Geologico site sits beside the SS185 road with its own car park and ticket office, where a lift and stairway descend to the river. A free public access point a short distance away also leads down to the gorge floor via a longer stairway. The walking itself is short, roughly 2km round trip with about 50m of descent, but the experience centres on wading upstream through the shallow, icy river between the basalt walls rather than covering distance. The riverbed is rock and gravel, slippery in places, and water shoes are essential; the gorge stays cool and shaded even on hot days. In summer the flow is low enough to wade comfortably some way into the canyon, while spring snowmelt and autumn rain can raise the water and close the floor route for safety. Cliff-top paths and the botanical garden above offer aerial views of the canyon for those who prefer to stay dry. There are no refuge huts, but the main site has cafés, toilets, and equipment rental near the entrance. The river itself is the only water feature, and it is too cold and fast for prolonged immersion. A sensible turn-around is the point where the canyon narrows and the current strengthens. Combining dramatic columnar lava, refreshing water, and easy access, the Alcantara Gorge is a rewarding half-day outing for families and casual walkers in eastern Sicily.
