San Vito Lo Capo

San Vito Lo Capo sits at the tip of a cape on Sicily's north-west coast, in the Trapani province, and is built around one of the most celebrated beaches in Italy: a broad arc of fine white sand sloping into shallow, brilliantly turquoise water, backed by the dramatic limestone bulk of Monte Monaco. The town itself is small and low-rise, a relaxed grid of whitewashed houses, gelaterie, and seafood trattorie centred on the pedestrian Via Savoia, which leads down to the seafront. The bay's Caribbean-like colours and gentle, child-friendly gradient have made it a magnet for beach holidays, and in the warmer months sunbeds, umbrellas, and watersports rentals line the shore alongside free public stretches. Beyond the sand, the cape is a gateway to the wild Zingaro Nature Reserve a short drive east and to boat trips around the coast. San Vito has a strong Arab-Sicilian culinary identity, celebrated each September at the Cous Cous Fest, an international festival of the fish couscous that is the town's signature dish. A beach day fills a half to full day, longer for those combining swimming with a hike or a boat excursion. The water is calmest and the sand least crowded in the early morning and late afternoon; the middle of summer days and August in particular see the beach packed. Photographers love the view back to the lighthouse and Monte Monaco from the water's edge.
