Agriturismo Barbagia is a traditional Sardinian farm stay located in the mountain terrain above Orgosolo, a historic hill town in Nuoro Province celebrated for its extraordinary collection of political street murals and its position deep in the Barbagia highlands of central Sardinia. The agriturismo model — a working farm that opens its home to paying guests — is deeply embedded in Sardinian rural culture, and properties in the Barbagia region are considered among the finest examples of this tradition anywhere on the island.

The property lies in the upland landscape that surrounds Orgosolo, a mix of holm oak forest, rocky limestone outcrops, and the open pasture land where the hosts raise their sheep flock. The farm produces its own cheese — including fresh and aged versions of local pecorino — as well as wine from native Sardinian grape varieties and vegetables grown in the kitchen garden. Guests who opt for the half-board arrangement (the recommended choice) eat meals prepared almost entirely from the farm's own production.

Accommodation consists of simple but comfortable guest rooms in the farmhouse building. Rooms are furnished in a functional Sardinian style — stone floors, wooden furniture, handwoven textiles — without the amenities of a coastal resort hotel. The atmosphere is familial: guests eat at shared tables with the hosts and other visitors, and the proprietors are generous with local knowledge and personal warmth. The absence of a conventional hotel reception is replaced by the genuine hospitality of the rural Sardinian tradition.

The cooking is outstanding by any standard. Dinner typically includes a succession of antipasti — cured meats, aged pecorino, olives, and fresh vegetables — followed by a pasta course with a meat ragù, a main course of roasted or grilled meat from the farm, and seasonal desserts. The Cannonau wine served is from Nuoro Province, the heartland of this deeply tannic, warming indigenous Sardinian variety.

Orgosolo's murals — over 150 paintings covering entire building facades — are a short walk from most parts of the town and are unlike any other street art in Italy for their political directness and visual power. The Supramonte mountain plateau, with its dramatic limestone gorges including the Gola Su Gorroppu (one of Europe's deepest canyons), is accessible from trails near Orgosolo. The Gennargentu peaks are within reach for experienced hill walkers. The agriturismo is best accessed between April and October when mountain roads are clear.
