Best Day Trips from Sardinia 2025
Discover the best day trip destinations and excursions from Sardinia.
Sardinia is Italy's second-largest island, famed for its pristine turquoise waters, rugged interior mountains, and ancient Nuragic civilizations. The island offers an extraordinary blend of dramatic coastlines, traditional villages, and vibrant cities that remain authentically Italian.
Top 10 Day Trips
The best excursions from Sardinia.
La Maddalena Archipelago
The La Maddalena Archipelago National Park comprises 62 islands and islets off the northeastern tip of Sardinia, with some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean. The main island of La Maddalena has a charming town, and day boat trips visit the most spectacular beaches including Spiaggia Rosa on the island of Budelli (the famous pink sand beach — now protected and viewable only from offshore), Cala Coticcio on Caprera, and Cala Napoletana.
Neptune's Grotto and Capo Caccia
The boat trip from Alghero to Neptune's Grotto combines the dramatic Capo Caccia cliffs, griffon vulture watching, and one of Italy's most spectacular sea caves. The cave extends 2.5 km into the cliff with chambers of extraordinary stalactites, stalagmites, and an underground lake. Alternatively, descend the dramatic 654-step staircase carved into the cliffsides for a more adventurous arrival.
Nuraghe Su Nuraxi and Barumini
Sardinia's only UNESCO World Heritage Site, Su Nuraxi near Barumini is the island's most impressive Nuragic monument — a massive Bronze Age complex dating from 1500 BC. Combine with the Giovanni Lilliu Museum in Barumini, the nearby Giara di Gesturi plateau (home to wild Sardinian ponies), and traditional Campidanese cuisine for lunch in the village.
Gulf of Orosei Beaches by Boat
A full-day boat trip from the small harbour of Cala Gonone is one of the greatest day out experiences in Sardinia. Boats call at Cala Biriola, Cala Mariolu, Cala Goloritzé (UNESCO Natural Monument), Cala Sisine, and Cala Luna, with time for swimming and snorkelling at each stop. The limestone cliff scenery is extraordinary.
Gorropu Gorge and Supramonte
A day in Europe's deepest canyon and the spectacular Supramonte landscape. The walk into Gorropu gorge, with walls soaring 500 metres overhead, is one of Italy's great hiking experiences. Combine with a visit to Tiscali cave village (3 km away) and dinner at Hotel Su Gologone in Oliena for a perfect Sardinian day.
Tharros and Sinis Peninsula Beaches
A spectacular full day combining the Phoenician-Roman ruins of Tharros on a dramatic sea peninsula with the extraordinary quartz beaches of the Sinis Peninsula, including Is Arutas, Mari Ermi, and San Giovanni di Sinis. The area is part of a Marine Protected Area with some of the clearest water in Sardinia.
La Pelosa Beach and Stintino
A day trip to what is consistently voted one of Europe's most beautiful beaches. La Pelosa's electric turquoise shallow water, fine white sand, and Aragonese tower are genuinely extraordinary. Combine with the charming lobster-fishing village of Stintino and a drive through the Asinara National Park headland viewpoint.
Orgosolo and Barbagia Mountain Villages
A cultural day trip into the heart of Sardinian mountain identity. Orgosolo's extraordinary political murals cover an entire village; nearby Oliena is famous for its Cannonau wine and traditional costumes; Mamoiada hosts the Museum of Mediterranean Masks (the famous mamuthones carnival masks). Lunch at a traditional Barbagia trattoria completes the experience.
Costa Smeralda and Porto Cervo
A day exploring the glamorous Costa Smeralda — the Aga Khan's legendary creation from the 1960s. Visit Porto Cervo's luxury marina and boutiques, swim at Spiaggia del Principe and Liscia Ruja, and have an aperitivo on the marina terrace watching the superyachts. Even non-millionaires can enjoy the spectacular scenery for free.
