Bosa Medieval Town

Bosa, set a little inland on the west coast of Sardinia in the province of Oristano, is widely considered one of the island's prettiest towns, famous for the tiers of pastel-coloured houses that climb the hillside above the Temo river beneath the ruined Malaspina Castle. Visitors wander the Sa Costa quarter, a steep tangle of narrow stepped lanes and bright facades in ochre, pink, blue, and green, then follow the riverfront where old palm-lined quays and arched bridges reflect the colourful skyline. Along the south bank stand Sas Conzas, the historic tanneries where leather was once worked using the river, now a rare surviving complex of riverside industrial buildings open to explore. Crowning the town, the Malaspina (Serravalle) Castle rewards a short uphill walk with sweeping views over the rooftops, the river valley, and the coast, plus a small frescoed chapel within the walls; admission is a few euros. The Cathedral of the Immacolata Concezione and a scattering of small churches add to the historic core. Bosa is also known for its rare Malvasia di Bosa, an amber dessert wine produced in the surrounding hills, and for nearby Bosa Marina, a sandy beach at the river mouth a couple of kilometres away. A visit comfortably fills two to four hours, longer with the beach. The riverside is fairly level and easy to stroll, but the lanes of Sa Costa and the climb to the castle are steep and stepped. Late spring and early autumn bring the most pleasant temperatures, and the early evening is especially atmospheric, when the coloured houses light up and mirror in the slow Temo. Photographers favour the river views from the bridges and the panorama from the castle walls, making Bosa a memorable stop on Sardinia's western coast.
