Self-Guided Soziglia Sweets Walk

  • Duration1.5-2 hours
  • Price€10-25 (~$12-29) per person

This self-guided pastry walk has no tour operator and is organised by the walker, in the historic centre of Genoa, the capital of Italy's Liguria region. It concentrates three historic stops within a few steps of Piazza Soziglia, one of the old town's elegant pedestrian squares, and takes about one and a half to two hours. Prices are roughly €10-25 (about $12-29) per person, paid at each counter.

A short pastry route: Pasticceria Klainguti (Piazza di Soziglia 98R, opened 1828), the candied-fruit shop Pietro Romanengo (Piazza Soziglia 74-76R, 1814 shop) and focaccia or a torta from Antico Forno della Casana (Vico della Casana 21).

Pasticceria Klainguti, at Piazza di Soziglia 98R, opened in 1828 and was founded by Swiss pastry chefs; it sells Engadina cake, sacripantina, a layered sponge and buttercream cake, and quaresimali, the Lenten biscuits. Pietro Romanengo, at Piazza Soziglia 74-76R (+39 010 2474574), is a candied-fruit and confectionery shop whose shop dates from 1814 and has kept its 19th-century interior; it sells sugared almonds, candied fruit and chocolates with candied violets. The third stop is Antico Forno della Casana, at Vico della Casana 21, a bakery offering focaccia and torta di bietole, the Ligurian chard pie. The balance is therefore mostly sweet, with one savoury stop to finish. There is no guide, included food, drinks or transit, and no set group size, so the pace is the walker's own and the whole route is on foot over short flat-to-cobbled distances in a pedestrian area. Opening hours should be confirmed on site because only Romanengo's are published: it is open Tuesday to Saturday 10AM-7PM per OpenStreetMap, and on Monday it opens at 3PM. Klainguti's hours are not published, so checking the door is advised. Dietary needs are the walker's own responsibility, since the products contain wheat, dairy, eggs and nuts, and staff can answer ingredient questions at each counter. Visitors often buy small boxes of sugared almonds or candied fruit as gifts, and photography inside the historic shops is best done by asking staff first.
