Sanctuary of Montallegro (Rapallo)

The Sanctuary of Montallegro sits high on a wooded ridge at around 612 metres above Rapallo, on the Gulf of Tigullio. It was built in 1557 to 1558 following a reported apparition of the Virgin Mary to a local peasant, Giovanni Chichizola, on 2 July 1557, and it remains an important Marian pilgrimage site, its church preserving a small Byzantine icon said to have appeared miraculously at the spot. The sanctuary's later neo-Gothic facade and its hilltop terrace are the focus of a visit, the terrace giving wide views over Rapallo, the gulf and the coast towards Portofino. The most enjoyable way up is the panoramic cable car, opened in 1934, which rises roughly 1,500 metres from Piazzale Solari in central Rapallo to the ridge in a few minutes, swinging high above terraced hillsides; the alternative is a winding mountain road or marked walking trails. A visit takes two to three hours including the cable-car ride. The church is free to enter during daytime hours; the cable car charges a return fare and runs with a midday pause, weather permitting, so confirming times by phone before setting out is sensible. The site is busiest around the 2 July feast day and on summer weekends, while clear weekdays are quiet and offer the best long views. The panorama from the terrace over the Gulf of Tigullio is the photograph to seek. Surrounded by walking trails near the summit, the sanctuary suits visitors who enjoy combining a pilgrimage site with a hike high above this stretch of eastern Liguria.
