Galata Museo del Mare

Housed in a converted 17th-century arsenal building on the Darsena waterfront, the Galata Museo del Mare is the largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean and one of Genoa's most absorbing indoor attractions. Its four floors trace the city's seafaring story from the age of oar-powered galleys to transatlantic liners. The centrepiece is a full-scale reconstructed Genoese galley that visitors can board, complete with the cramped rowing benches that explain how Mediterranean sea power was projected. A standout section, the MeM Memoria e Migrazioni galleries, uses recreated ship interiors, dockside sets and personal documents to tell the story of Italian emigration through the port and, in its later rooms, of present-day migration to Italy. Interactive bridges let visitors steer a simulated vessel through a storm, and the rooftop Mirador terrace gives a sweeping view over the old harbour and La Lanterna. Moored alongside the museum is the 1976 submarine Nazario Sauro (S 518), now a floating exhibit that visitors can walk through bow to stern, squeezing past torpedo tubes, bunks and the control room for a vivid sense of life below the surface. A full visit, including the submarine, takes two to three hours. The museum opens generally daily, with shorter hours in winter, and a combined ticket adds the submarine; the best overall value links the Galata with the nearby Aquarium and submarine on one pass. Crowds peak on rainy days and summer afternoons, while mornings are quieter and leave enough time for the submarine, which is boarded in timed groups. The galley deck, the emigration sets and the rooftop harbour view are the most photogenic stops. The museum sits in the Darsena district of Liguria's capital, beside the Darsena metro stop and within walking distance of Genova Piazza Principe station and the old port.
