Spianata Castelletto Viewpoint

The Spianata Castelletto, officially the Belvedere Luigi Montaldo, is a broad, pine-shaded terrace perched roughly 80 metres above Genoa's old town, laid out on the site of a hilltop fortress that was demolished in 1849. It is one of the city's finest free viewpoints: from its railings the whole centro storico spreads out below, a sea of slate rooftops and bell towers running down to the Old Port, with La Lanterna and the harbour cranes in the distance and, on clear days, the hills beyond. The esplanade has benches, a small cafe and shade trees, and is a favourite spot for locals at the end of the day. The most charming way up is the Art Nouveau public lift that rises from Piazza del Portello, a 1910 Liberty-style elevator that climbs through the hillside and emerges at the belvedere; it runs from early morning until around midnight and uses an ordinary AMT transit ticket. Walkers can instead climb the stepped lanes, or creuze, that thread up from the old town. A visit takes around half an hour, longer to linger over a coffee or a sunset. The terrace is busiest at sunset and on warm summer evenings, when its golden light over the rooftops and harbour draws photographers and couples; mornings are quiet. The classic shot looks west across the old town towards the harbour as the sun drops. Free to enter and open at all hours, the Spianata is one of the most rewarding short outings in Liguria's regional capital, easily combined with a walk down through the Castelletto stairways into the historic centre below.
