Sentiero degli Dei del Gargano — Monte Calvo Loop

The Sentiero degli Dei del Gargano Monte Calvo Loop is a 12-kilometre circular trail within the Gargano National Park in Apulia, southern Italy, summiting the highest point on the Gargano promontory at 1,065 metres above sea level. The trailhead begins at the Bosco Umbra Visitor Centre (Via Foresta Umbra, 71017 Peschici FG), reachable by private car from Vieste in approximately 15 minutes — no bus service reaches the starting point. Parking is available adjacent to the visitor centre, and free trail maps are distributed at the front desk. No advance permit is required for day hikes.

The first two kilometres climb moderately through beech and maple forest — the southern edge of the Foresta Umbra — on a well-marked dirt path with regular CAI (Club Alpino Italiano) waymarkers. After the treeline thins, the trail opens onto the rocky limestone plateau characteristic of the Gargano uplands, where panoramic views extend north to the Adriatic coast and south across the Tavoliere plains. The summit of Monte Calvo is marked by a small cairn and provides 360-degree views in clear conditions; the descent on the western flank is steeper and crosses loose scree sections, demanding careful footfall.

Total elevation gain on the circuit is approximately 550 metres. The surface alternates between compact dirt track, exposed limestone rock, and occasional scree; there is no boardwalk and shade is minimal above the treeline. Hikers should carry at least two litres of water per person as there are no water sources beyond the visitor centre. No refuge huts exist on this particular loop, though the Bosco Umbra visitor centre has a café and picnic area at the start and finish point. The trail is waymarked with CAI red-and-white blazes and is straightforward to follow in clear conditions.

Total circuit time is 4–5 hours at a moderate pace. A recommended turnaround point for less experienced walkers is the plateau edge at roughly kilometre 5, which provides the principal viewpoint without committing to the scree descent. The full loop should be completed before early afternoon in summer to avoid afternoon thunderstorms, which develop rapidly over the Gargano uplands between July and August.
