Punta Prosciutto

Punta Prosciutto is a stretch of Ionian coastline near Porto Cesareo in the Lecce Province of Apulia that is routinely described as one of the most Caribbean-like beaches in Italy. The sand here is exceptionally fine and white, almost powder-soft, and the shallow Ionian Sea retains an intense turquoise colour that deepens only gradually as visitors wade further out. The beach forms part of the Porto Cesareo Marine Protected Area, which regulates fishing, anchoring, and some water activities in the surrounding sea, contributing to the quality of the marine environment and outstanding water clarity.

The beach runs for several kilometres along a gently curving coastline backed by low Mediterranean scrub and dunes. In its undeveloped sections it has a remote, desert-island quality — wide open sand, flat water, and a horizon unbroken by development. The organised sections have beach bars and sunbed concessions operating through summer. Kite-surfing is popular to the south of the main beach, where a consistent afternoon sea breeze from the northwest creates good flat-water conditions. Snorkelling along the rocks at the cape itself yields sightings of octopus, sea bream, and occasionally loggerhead sea turtles, which nest within the marine reserve.

A car is essentially required for visiting Punta Prosciutto; the beach lies 40 kilometres from Lecce with no direct bus service. The road terminates at a paid parking area (approximately 5 euros per day in season) from which the beach is a short flat walk. Facilities in the immediate area are limited beyond the seasonal beach bar; the nearest town, Porto Cesareo, is around 10 kilometres and has restaurants and shops. Crowds build considerably in July and August, when this beach is among the most popular in Salento; June and September see the same water quality with significantly fewer visitors.
