Baia dei Turchi

Baia dei Turchi — the Bay of the Turks — is a sheltered white-sand cove approximately 8 kilometres north of Otranto on the Adriatic coast of the Salento peninsula in Apulia. The name commemorates the Ottoman landing of 1480, when Turkish forces came ashore here before capturing the city of Otranto, an event that remains embedded in local memory and in the crypt of Otranto's cathedral. Today the bay is one of the most pristine natural beaches in Puglia, drawing visitors who come for its unusual combination of white powdery sand, extraordinarily clear turquoise water, and a dense backdrop of ancient stone pine and Mediterranean maquis that provides natural shade.

The beach itself is roughly 300 metres of fine sand forming a gently curving arc between low rocky headlands. The sea bottom transitions from pale sand to scattered posidonia seagrass meadows just offshore, contributing to the exceptional water clarity. Snorkelling along the rocky flanks of the cove reveals an abundance of marine life. The bay lies within a protected coastal zone; no motorised beach concessions are permitted and the beach remains in a near-natural state — no sunbeds, no umbrellas, no loud music. Visitors bring their own equipment.

Access requires either a 20-minute walk from the car park on the SP358 road north of Otranto, or a bicycle from the town along the flat coastal road (approximately 8 kilometres). There is no bus service to the bay. The walk through the pine forest is pleasant and provides rich bird habitat; early mornings in May and June are particularly quiet and good for wildlife observation. In July and August the beach attracts large crowds despite its distance from facilities; arriving before 9 am secures shade and sand space. A single seasonal snack bar operates at the forest edge in summer. Swimming is excellent throughout the season, with the water remaining clear and calm even in moderate Adriatic breezes.
