Basilica di San Nicola, Bari

The Basilica di San Nicola in Bari's old town is one of the most important pilgrimage churches in the Christian world, drawing devotees from both Catholic and Orthodox traditions to venerate the relics of Saint Nicholas of Myra — the historical figure behind the Santa Claus legend — whose bones were brought here from Asia Minor in 1087 by Bariot sailors. The basilica is a foundational monument of Romanesque architecture in southern Italy, begun immediately after the relics' arrival and consecrated in 1197. Its austere stone facade, divided by blind arcading and framed by twin bell towers, established a template that influenced church building across Apulia for the following two centuries. The interior is vast and sober, the nave lined by ancient columns and lit by small upper windows. The most visited space is the crypt beneath the main floor, where the silver altar over Saint Nicholas's tomb is the constant focus of veneration throughout the day. Pilgrims of both Catholic and Orthodox faith kneel before the altar in silence; the Greek Orthodox chapel immediately adjacent to the crypt holds particular significance for Eastern Christian communities and hosts Greek Orthodox liturgies in a dedicated space. Above ground, the 12th-century stone baldachin — an altar canopy carved in Romanesque style — is one of the most refined sculptural works in the region. The treasury museum accessible from the main basilica holds a collection of historic vestments, reliquaries, and liturgical gifts accumulated over centuries of pilgrimage. The piazza outside forms the historical heart of Bari Vecchia's oldest quarter, animated by a fish market in the morning and café tables in the evening. The basilica is reachable on foot from Bari Centrale station in around 20 minutes.
