Denpasar is the capital of Bali province and its largest city, home to about 725,000 people. It is the island's administrative, trading and cultural centre, with the Bajra Sandhi Monument, Museum Bali, the Badung produce market and the Sanur beach district.
Denpasar eats Balinese food first: babi guling (spit-roast suckling pig), lawar (minced vegetable and meat salad), sate lilit (minced seafood or chicken satay on lemongrass), nasi campur and jinggo rice parcels. Local night markets such as Pasar Kreneng serve these cheaply, while Sanur on the southeast coast has the concentration of cafes and tourist-facing restaurants along Jl. Danau Tamblingan. Renon, the government district, has newer cafes and chain restaurants.
