The Rumi Darwaza is a monumental Awadhi gateway in the old city of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, standing beside the Bara Imambara complex and often treated as an emblem of the city. Built in the 18th century in the time of the Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, it rises roughly 20 metres and is decorated with ornamental arches, scrollwork and a crowning lantern.

The Awadhi gateway beside the Imambara is a recognised Lucknow landmark and is lit in the evening.

The main frame is from the road in front of the gateway, looking through the central arch toward the Imambara side, and it works best with a wide-angle lens that includes the full arch and the sky above. The gateway faces east-west along the road, so late afternoon and sunset light falls on the facade from the west, giving a warm tone to the plaster and detail, and evening illumination adds a second opportunity after dark. Blue hour, just after sunset, balances the artificial lighting with the sky and is usually the strongest time for photography. The best season is October to March, when evenings are cool and the sky clearer; summer dust and heat can reduce clarity, and the monsoon brings dramatic clouds but wet streets. The gateway stands in a busy traffic corridor, with cars, rickshaws and pedestrians passing through the arch, so photographers often wait for gaps or use a longer exposure to blur the traffic into trails. A tripod is useful for those night shots, though street space is limited and a compact model is easier to place; there is no entrance fee for viewing from the road. Drones are not permitted without special approval. Take care with traffic and keep equipment close, since the area is crowded in the evening. Nearby stalls sell tea and snacks, and the Bara Imambara and Chota Imambara are within walking distance for a combined visit.
