Dudhwa Tiger Reserve lies in the Terai region of Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh, near the border with Nepal, and protects a mix of sal forest, grassland and wetland. It is known for swamp deer (barasingha), greater one-horned rhinoceros reintroduced from Assam and Nepal, tigers, elephants and a wide range of grassland and wetland birds. Photography takes place mostly from open jeeps on designated tracks, and sometimes from watchtowers or on elephant-back where offered, so the frame depends on what the guide spots: swamp deer herds on open meadows, rhino near the Sonaripur or Kishanpur areas, and birds around the ponds and lakes. Early morning and late afternoon give the best light and the highest animal activity, with golden side-light across the grass and mist over the meadows in winter. A telephoto lens in the 200-500mm range is standard, supported by a beanbag or a clamp on the jeep rail, and a mid-range zoom is useful for landscapes and birds close to the vehicle. The park is generally open from November to mid-June, with the best season for sightings from November to April; the monsoon closes most of the reserve. Jeep safaris require permits and a mandatory guide, and numbers are limited, so bookings through the forest department or authorised operators are best made ahead. Entry and jeep fees apply and are higher for foreign visitors. Tripods are impractical in a moving jeep, drones are prohibited in protected areas, and flash and loud noise are not allowed. The reserve is less visited than other Indian tiger reserves, so crowding is low and wildlife encounters feel quiet. Visitors should stay in the vehicle except at designated points, and basic lodging and facilities are available in the park area and nearby towns.
