Charminar stands at the heart of Hyderabad's Old City in Telangana, India, a granite and lime-mortar monument raised in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. Four arches face the cardinal directions, and four minarets rise about 56 metres from the corners, each ringed by balconies and topped with small domes.

The building sits in the middle of a busy traffic island on Charminar Road, so the first impression is as much about the bustle around it as the architecture itself: bangle sellers, pearl shops, tea stalls and auto-rickshaws crowd every side. Visitors typically walk a full circuit of the base to take in the stucco ornamentation, the carved balconies and the clock faces added in later centuries, then enter through one of the arches. Inside, a narrow spiral staircase leads to the first floor, from where the view over Laad Bazaar and towards the nearby Mecca Masjid is the main reward. Access to the upper level is restricted at times, so it is worth confirming on the day. A visit takes roughly an hour to an hour and a half, including time to wander the surrounding lanes. The best photo angles come from the pedestrian side lanes at a slight distance, where all four minarets fit in frame, and from the rooftop terraces of nearby cafes at dusk. Early morning before about 10AM is the calmest window, with softer light and thinner traffic. After 7PM the monument is illuminated and the plaza fills with families and shoppers. During Ramzan the nights are festive, with food stalls serving haleem and sweets, but the area becomes extremely crowded and slow to move through. Midday in summer is hot and the stone offers little shade. The monument is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India, and foreign visitors pay a higher ticket price than Indian nationals. Combining Charminar with Mecca Masjid, Laad Bazaar and Chowmahalla Palace makes a natural half-day of Old City sightseeing.
