Ramappa Temple, also called the Rudreshwara Temple, stands at Palampet in Venkatapur Mandal of Mulugu District, about 70 km northeast of Warangal in Telangana. Built in 1213 under the Kakatiya ruler Ganapati Deva, and named after its architect Recherla Rudra, the Shiva temple was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021. The temple is built of red sandstone on a raised star-shaped platform, with a main hall, a sanctum and a Nandi shrine facing it. Its most celebrated features are the carved black basalt pillars and brackets, decorated with dancers, musicians and mythological figures, and the sculpted madanika figures that adorn the exterior columns. The roof is famed for the so-called floating bricks, light porous bricks that are said to float on water and reduced the weight on the structure, helping the temple survive centuries of earthquakes. Visitors circle the platform, study the sculptures and enter the hall to see the polished pillars and the Shiva lingam in the sanctum. The nearby Ramappa Lake, a large reservoir, and its surrounding countryside give a peaceful setting, and the best photographs come from the platform steps, the Nandi shrine and the lake shore. A visit takes about one and a half to two hours. The temple is usually quiet, with crowds increasing at weekends, during festivals such as Maha Shivaratri and after the World Heritage listing. Entry is INR 25 for Indian nationals and INR 300 for foreign visitors, with children under 15 free, and the temple is open daily from about 6:00AM to 6:00PM. The site is about 70 km from Warangal, reached by bus to Mulugu or by taxi for about INR 2,500 to 3,500 return. Because the journey takes over an hour each way, visitors often combine Ramappa with Warangal Fort and the Thousand Pillar Temple on a longer day.
