Marine Drive and the Queen's Necklace

Marine Drive curves for three kilometres along Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Road in South Mumbai, tracing the edge of Back Bay from Nariman Point to Chowpatty Beach. The classic frame faces west across the Arabian Sea, with the promenade's cast-iron lamps and the sweep of Art Deco apartment blocks forming the foreground curve that gives the street its nickname, the Queen's Necklace. At sunset the sky over the sea does the work; twenty to forty minutes after the sun drops, the streetlights switch on and the curve of lamps against the darkening bay becomes the signature shot, best captured from an elevated vantage such as an upper-floor office window near Nariman Point or a sea-facing hotel terrace, or at street level from the parapet near Wilson College. Late-afternoon side light rakes the Art Deco facades along the inner curve, useful for architectural detail separate from the seascape. Clear skies from November to February give the sharpest air and the most reliable colour at dusk; the June-to-September monsoon trades clarity for drama, with waves breaking over the parapet worth exposing for on their own. The promenade is busy every evening with walkers, joggers, and street vendors, and weekends bring the heaviest crowds, so a tripod position on the parapet is easiest to hold if staked out at least half an hour before sunset. Tripods are permitted on the public footpath at no cost, though police occasionally ask photographers to keep the walkway clear during peak evening hours. Drones are effectively off-limits here without prior DGCA clearance, given the dense urban corridor and nearby government buildings. There is no entry fee, since the promenade is open public road frontage.
