Gateway of India and the Taj Mahal Palace

The Gateway of India stands on Apollo Bandar in Colaba, a basalt triumphal arch completed in 1924 that faces east across Mumbai Harbour, with the Taj Mahal Palace hotel's Moorish dome rising immediately to the south. The strongest frame places the arch itself in the foreground with harbour boats and the water beyond, or, from the harbour side near the jetty, both landmarks together with the hotel dome balancing the arch. Sunrise gives the emptiest plaza and warm, low light striking the arch's eastern face directly; by mid-morning tour groups, balloon sellers, and photographers with props fill the plaza. Blue hour is the other strong window, when floodlights come up on both the arch and the hotel facade while the sky still holds colour, making it possible to hold detail in stone and sky together. November through February brings the clearest air off the harbour; the monsoon months add dramatic skies but heavy haze that flattens the long view toward the hotel. The site is a major security landmark with a visible police and CISF presence, so full-size tripods can draw attention and are sometimes asked to be folded; a monopod or handheld shooting with image stabilisation is the more reliable approach, especially at sunrise when light is already workable. There is no entry fee to view or photograph the exterior, and the adjacent jetty is the departure point for ferries to Elephanta Island.
