Crawford Market, officially Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai, occupies a Norman-Gothic building on Lokmanya Tilak Marg in Fort, its covered halls stacked with fruit, vegetable, spice, and dry-goods stalls beneath a patterned Minton-tile roof. The characteristic frame catches shafts of daylight coming through the roof's skylights and ventilation gaps, cutting through the market's ambient dust and haze to spotlight a stall or a porter's basket below; wider shots take in the stacked produce and the ironwork of the market's Victorian structure. Mid-morning, roughly 09:00 to noon, is when stalls are fullest and the light shafts are most visible against the market's dim interior, since the low sun angle sends beams further into the halls than midday's more vertical light. November to February is the market's busiest and clearest season; the narrow aisles crowd further ahead of festivals. The lanes between stalls are tight and constantly moving with porters, handcarts, and shoppers, making a tripod impractical; a compact body with a fast 35mm or 50mm prime and high ISO in place of flash is the more workable setup, since flash disrupts vendors and draws unwanted attention. There is no entry fee to the market, and photographing the stalls and general activity is tolerated, though individual vendors should be asked before close portraits.
