Karnataka is a large state in southwest India, stretching from the Arabian Sea coast across the forested Western Ghats to the Deccan plateau. It combines the UNESCO-listed ruins of Hampi, the Hoysala temples of Belur and Halebidu, the royal city of Mysuru, coffee-covered Coorg hills, and the beaches of Gokarna and Udupi, with Bengaluru as India's technology capital.
Karnataka covers nearly 192,000 square kilometres, from the 320 km Arabian Sea coast at Gokarna, Udupi, and Mangaluru, up through the rainforest and coffee estates of the Western Ghats in Coorg and Chikmagalur, to the granite boulder landscape of Hampi on the Deccan plateau. Bengaluru, the capital, is a major hub for technology, craft beer, and cafes and is the usual arrival point. Mysuru offers its illuminated Maharaja's Palace and Dasara festival, while Belur, Halebidu, Sravanabelagola, Badami, Aihole, and Pattadakal hold some of India's finest temple architecture. Wildlife lovers can visit Kabini, Bandipur, and Nagarhole for tigers and elephants. Distances are large, so most visitors plan two or three regional circuits rather than trying to see everything.

Bengaluru has India's main southern air hub, three Namma Metro lines and a huge bus network. Mysuru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi, Mangaluru and Hosapete are on the rail network, with Vande Bharat services on the Bengaluru trunk routes. The coast is served by the Konkan Railway. Hampi, Coorg, Gokarna and the Belur-Halebidu circuit are best reached by a mix of bus and hired taxi.

Best time to visit Karnataka
Weather through the year in Karnataka
Best timeShoulderWorth avoiding
Average daytime temperature in °C. Figures are for Karnataka.
Karnataka is best visited from October to February, when days are dry and pleasant across most of the state. The southwest monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain to the coast and Western Ghats, when Jog Falls and the Coorg hills are at their greenest but beaches and water sports close.
Coorg and Chikmagalur are pleasant from October to March. Mysuru's Dasara festival (September-October) draws large crowds; book rooms well ahead. Wildlife safaris at Kabini and Bandipur are best February-May when animals gather near water.
Essential travel tips
Plan by circuits: Bengaluru-Mysuru-Coorg, Hampi-Badami, and the coast (Gokarna-Udupi-Mangaluru) rather than trying to cover the whole state
Book trains on IRCTC and KSRTC buses at ksrtc.in at least two to three weeks ahead for weekends and festivals
Remove shoes before entering temples and dress modestly; carry socks for hot stone floors
Try masala dosa, bisi bele bath, Mysore pak, and filter coffee, and seek out Udupi vegetarian meals
Carry cash (INR 500 and smaller notes) for rural sites; UPI apps are widely accepted but foreign cards may not work at small vendors
Book Kabini and Bandipur safari rooms early; forest department safaris sell out on weekends
Hidden gems
Off-the-beaten-path corners most travellers miss.
Anegundi and Anjanadri Hill
A village of the pre-Vijayanagara Kishkindha kingdom across the Tungabhadra from Hampi with a 570-step climb to the Hanuman birthplace shrine

Srirangapatna, Mandya district
Kudle Beach
A long quiet beach south of Gokarna town with shacks and yoga camps
Gokarna
Safety information
INFO
Karnataka is generally safe for tourists; the main risks are road accidents, petty theft, overcharging by autorickshaw drivers, and stomach illness. Violent crime against visitors is uncommon.
INFO
Use ride apps (Uber, Ola, Namma Yatri, Rapido) in Bengaluru and Mysuru; note the vehicle number and share the trip with a contact. Metered autos are required to use the meter, but many refuse, so agree a price or use an app.
INFO
Drink only sealed bottled or filtered water; avoid ice at street stalls and eat freshly cooked hot food. Carry oral rehydration salts (ORS sachets from any pharmacy).
INFO
Bengaluru traffic is severe and pedestrian crossings are rare; cross with locals, use footbridges and allow double the expected travel time, especially to Kempegowda International Airport.
INFO
In forest reserves (Bandipur, Nagarhole, Kabini) follow park rules strictly, never leave the vehicle, and only walk in cleared areas; wild elephants regularly cross highways near Bandipur and Coorg.
INFO
On Gokarna, Karwar and Udupi beaches, swim only where lifeguards or locals are present; strong rip currents cause drownings every monsoon season (June-September); red-flag beaches are closed to swimming.
INFO
At Hampi, carry a hat, sun protection and water; boulders are slippery and snakes and scorpions occur on hill trails. Avoid climbing at sunset without a torch.
INFO
Keep passport copies and a digital scan; hotels are legally required to ask for ID and Form C (foreigners) registration.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa to visit Karnataka?

What are the top attractions in Karnataka?
The top attractions include Hampi, Mysuru Palace, the Hoysala temples of Belur and Halebidu, Coorg, Gokarna, Badami-Aihole-Pattadakal, Jog Falls, and Kabini wildlife safaris.
Is Karnataka safe for solo travellers?
