Karnataka is a large state in southwest India, stretching from the Arabian Sea coast across the forested Western Ghats to the Deccan plateau. It combines the UNESCO-listed ruins of Hampi, the Hoysala temples of Belur and Halebidu, the royal city of Mysuru, coffee-covered Coorg hills, and the beaches of Gokarna and Udupi, with Bengaluru as India's technology capital.
Best photo spots
Iconic and lesser-known locations worth shooting.
Virupaksha Temple and Hemakuta Hill Sunset, Hampi
The 50 m Virupaksha gopuram seen from Hemakuta Hill with the Tungabhadra and boulder fields behind is the defining Hampi sunset frame. Shorter pillared shrines on the hilltop provide foreground.
Best time: Sunset, about 30 minutes before to 20 minutes after; also sunrise light on the gopuram
Vittala Temple Stone Chariot, Hampi
The granite stone chariot (an iconic shrine shaped like a chariot) and the musical pillar hall are among India's most photographed monuments. The site is an ASI World Heritage property.
Best time: First hour after the gates open (about 8:30-9:30 AM) for low side light and few visitors
Matanga Hill Sunrise, Hampi
The highest easy climb in Hampi gives a 360-degree panorama of ruins, banana groves and the river as the sun rises; mist and warm side light sit on the boulders.
Best time: Pre-dawn to about 45 minutes after sunrise
Mysuru Palace Illumination
The Indo-Saracenic Amba Vilas Palace is lit on Sunday and holiday evenings and every night through Dasara. The main gate and the maidan opposite give the classic front frame.
Best time: Blue hour and 7-8 PM on Sundays, public holidays and during Dasara, when about 100,000 bulbs light the facade
Chamundi Hill Viewpoint, Mysuru
From the temple road and viewpoint terraces the palace, Karanji and Kukkarahalli lakes, and the plains of Mysuru are visible. The monolithic Nandi (Chamundi Hill Nandi) is a good foreground subject.
Best time: Sunrise and late afternoon; clear post-monsoon mornings
Jog Falls in Full Flow
India's second-highest plunge waterfall (about 253 m) splits into Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket. The main viewing platform is on the Shivamogga side and the lower trail gives base-level views.
Best time: Morning after heavy rain; mist reduces contrast by midday
Om Beach Sunset, Gokarna
The twin crescents of Om Beach (shaped like the Sanskrit Om) are best seen from the cliff-edge trail; fishing boats and coconut palms make foreground.
Best time: Sunset; golden hour about 5:30-6:45 PM in winter
Murudeshwar Shiva Statue and Raja Gopura
A large seafront Shiva statue below the towering Raja Gopura, on a cape jutting into the Arabian Sea. The lit temple and the sea produce dramatic dusk frames.
Best time: Late afternoon light and blue hour, when the 123 ft Shiva statue and 249 ft gopuram are lit
Mullayanagiri Sunrise over Cloud
Karnataka's highest summit puts photographers above cloud and layered Baba Budan Giri ridgelines. The short shrine-topped summit is exposed and cold at dawn.
Best time: Before and just after sunrise; fog fills valleys in late winter
Raja's Seat Sunset, Madikeri
A hilltop garden pavilion looking west over misty Kodagu valleys; the best sunset frames use the pavilion and the cloud-filled folds.
Best time: Sunset; the garden lights come on after dusk
Gol Gumbaz, Vijayapura
The mausoleum of Muhammad Adil Shah has one of the world's largest unsupported domes; the whispering gallery is a famous acoustic feature. Frame the dome from the garden lawn with the corner minarets.
Best time: Morning and late afternoon for warm light on the dome
Badami Cave Temples and Agastya Lake
Chalukya-era rock-cut caves above the green Agastya Lake; sandstone cliffs and steps make strong leading lines. Pattadakal and Aihole are nearby for a full Chalukya day.
Best time: Late afternoon, when the red sandstone glows
Chennakeshava Temple, Belur
Hoysala star-plan temple with carved madanika bracket figures, exquisite pillars and detailed friezes. Interior photography is allowed without flash in most areas; ask the priest at the doorway.
Best time: Morning side light; carved bracket figures in soft shade
Gomateshwara Statue, Sravanabelagola
The 57 ft monolithic statue of Gomateshwara (Bahubali) stands atop Vindhyagiri after about 620 steps. Pilgrims and terraced stone steps make strong human-scale frames.
Best time: Sunrise; monolithic 57 ft statue lit from the east
Vidhana Soudha and Lalbagh Glass House, Bengaluru
The granite Neo-Dravidian legislature building is lit Sundays and public holidays; Lalbagh's Glass House (Lalbagh Botanical Garden, 12.9507, 77.5848) hosts flower shows in late January and August.
Best time: Blue hour; Vidhana Soudha is lit on Sundays and holidays
Sri Krishna Matha, Udupi
The temple street, Car Street with its chariot procession and temple tank (Madhva Sarovara), is a strong subject for documentary photography.
Best time: Morning puja hours and evening arati

Photography tips
Make your shots stand out.
ASI-protected monuments (Hampi, Badami, Gol Gumbaz, Pattadakal) may charge camera or video fees and restrict tripods; ask at the ticket counter.
Drones need DGCA registration and are banned at protected monuments and near many forest and coastal areas; do not fly without written permission.
Ask before photographing people, especially at temples and in the fishing villages.
Waterproof your kit at Jog Falls, Kabini and in the monsoon.
Shoot wildlife with a 300 mm+ lens from the safari vehicle; keep voices low and stay inside the vehicle.
For pre-dawn hilltops carry a torch and warm layers; temperatures fall to near freezing at Mullayanagiri.
In temples, remove shoes and observe restrictions on photographing the sanctum image.
