Law Garden Night Market runs along the southern and western edges of Law Garden in the Ellisbridge district of Ahmedabad, in the Gujarat region of India, and it is the city's default answer to the question of where to buy anything embroidered. The stalls open around five in the afternoon and trade until roughly eleven at night, setting out hundreds of chaniya cholis, the flared skirt and blouse worn for garba, alongside mirror-worked bags, torans and door hangings, block-printed bedcovers, oxidised silver-tone jewellery and Kutchi embroidery panels. The market was rebuilt in 2020 into a permanent row of numbered stalls with paved walkways, which made it far easier to navigate than the informal line of handcarts it replaced. Prices are negotiable and expected to be negotiated, generally settling well below the opening quote, and several stalls rent complete garba outfits by the night rather than selling them outright, which suits visitors in town only for Navratri. Quality varies sharply from stall to stall: machine embroidery and screen prints sit beside genuine hand-worked Kutchi pieces, and the difference shows in the reverse of the fabric. Immediately alongside, the Law Garden khau gali serves pav bhaji, sandwiches, dabeli and kulfi from a line of carts, so the market doubles as an evening out rather than only a shopping errand. Demand peaks in the weeks before Navratri, when the lanes are close to impassable after eight in the evening.

Tips for visiting

  • Bargaining is expected; opening quotes routinely fall by a third or more
  • Check the reverse of embroidery to tell hand-worked Kutchi pieces from machine copies
  • Renting a chaniya choli for a night costs a fraction of buying one for a short Navratri visit
  • Carry cash in small notes, though most stalls now accept UPI payments
  • Arrive before 7PM in the fortnight before Navratri, when the lanes become very crowded

When to visit

Early evening from 5PM to 7PM for a calm browse and unhurried bargaining; the weeks before Navratri in September and October for the widest choice of garba outfits.

Accessibility

The rebuilt stall row has paved level walkways along the garden wall, but the aisles narrow considerably at peak hours and during Navratri, which makes wheelchair and pushchair movement difficult after about 7PM.

Frequently asked questions

What is Law Garden Night Market best for?

Garba clothing above all. It is the largest concentration of chaniya cholis, kediyu and mirror-work accessories in Ahmedabad, alongside Kutchi embroidery, torans, bags and block-printed textiles.

Are the prices fixed?

No. Bargaining is the norm and opening quotes are set high. Settling at roughly two-thirds of the first price is typical, and buying several items from one stall improves the rate.

When does the market open?

Stalls set up from about 5PM and trade until around 11PM daily. The liveliest hours are 7PM to 10PM, and the market stays open late throughout Navratri.

Is the embroidery genuine handwork?

Some of it is. Hand-worked Kutchi embroidery and machine-stitched copies are sold side by side, so it pays to compare the reverse of the fabric and to expect higher prices for genuine handwork.
