A stepped climb up an eroded volcanic hill inside a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological park, passing Hindu and Islamic ruins, fortified gateways and the Jami Masjid below, to the Kalika Mata shrine on the summit.
Pavagadh is an eroded volcanic plug that rises some 800 m above the flat farmland of Panchmahal district, and the climb up it is inseparable from the ruined city at its foot. Together they form the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, inscribed by UNESCO in 2004 as the only complete and unchanged pre-Mughal Islamic city in India. The walk begins in the plain among the mosques and stepwells of Champaner, most notably the Jami Masjid with its pair of minarets and carved mihrabs, then climbs through successive fortification gates to Machi, a mid-hill plateau with stalls, parking and the lower ropeway station. From Machi the route becomes stone steps, winding past Jain temples, water tanks cut into the rock, the Mauliya plateau and old fort walls before reaching the Kalika Mata temple at the summit, a Shakti Peetha of major pilgrimage importance that draws heavy crowds during Navratri and Chaitra. The summit shrine was extensively renovated and a new flag-staffed spire consecrated in 2022. The Pavagadh Ropeway climbs from Machi towards the summit area in five to seven minutes for about INR 150 return for adults and INR 80 for children (approximately USD 1.60 and USD 0.85), leaving a short flight of steps to the shrine itself, and it runs roughly from 6 AM to 6 PM. Walking the whole hill from the Champaner ruins takes two to three hours and rewards with a rare combination of archaeology, fortification and a living shrine on a single slope. The cool season from November to February is by far the most comfortable; the hill is green and dramatic in the monsoon but the steps become slippery.

- The Pavagadh Ropeway from Machi costs about INR 150 return for adults and INR 80 for children (approx USD 1.60 and USD 0.85) and runs roughly 6 AM to 6 PM.
- Avoid Navratri and Chaitra festival days unless the crowds are the point; queues to the summit shrine can run for hours.
- Start early in the morning, as the stepped sections above Machi have little shade.
- Footwear must be removed before entering the Kalika Mata shrine, so carry a cloth bag for shoes.
When to visit
Early morning between November and February, when the stepped upper sections are cool and haze over the Panchmahal plain is at its lightest.
Accessibility
The full climb is stepped and not wheelchair accessible. The ropeway from Machi reduces the ascent substantially, though steps remain between the upper station and the summit shrine.

Frequently asked questions
Is Pavagadh the same site as Champaner?
They are two halves of one UNESCO World Heritage property. Champaner is the ruined Sultanate city on the plain; Pavagadh is the hill above it, topped by the Kalika Mata temple.
Can the summit be reached without climbing?
The ropeway from Machi covers the steepest section in five to seven minutes, but a final flight of steps to the shrine still has to be walked.
How busy does the hill get?
Pavagadh is a major pilgrimage site. Weekday mornings outside festival season are manageable, while Navratri and Chaitra bring very large crowds and long queues.
