Blackbuck National Park at Velavadar sits about 70 km north of Bhavnagar in the Bhal region, on flat alluvial ground at the head of the Gulf of Khambhat. It is small - 34 square kilometres, grown from an original 18 square kilometres notified in 1976 - but it is one of India's most distinctive protected areas because it conserves tropical grassland rather than forest.

Velavadar protects 34 square kilometres of flat tropical grassland at the head of the Gulf of Khambhat, and is the best place in India to watch blackbuck - hundreds of them, the males spiralled-horned and near-black, sprinting across open savanna. The park also holds one of the world's largest known harrier roosts and a rare accessible population of Indian wolf.

That habitat produces the park's signature sight: blackbuck in large numbers on open savanna, the mature males almost black with long spiralled horns, gathering on territorial leks in the rut and exploding into the long bounding gallop that makes them among the fastest animals in Asia. The flat sightlines mean sightings are frequent but often distant, so binoculars and a long lens matter more here than in a forest park. Beyond blackbuck the grassland supports nilgai, wild boar, Indian fox, golden jackal, jungle cat, striped hyena, and a population of Indian wolf that is unusually watchable by Indian standards. In winter the park is internationally significant for raptors: montagu's, pallid and marsh harriers pour into a communal grass roost at dusk in numbers that have been counted among the largest anywhere in the world, and the sight of them streaming in over the last light is the reason many birders come. After a good monsoon the endangered lesser florican performs its extraordinary vertical display leaps in the tall grass, usually from August into September. Habitat is mixed - dense and sparse grassland, Prosopis shrub, saline flats and tidal mudflats toward the gulf - and drives use forest department tracks with a compulsory guide. Fees and permits are paid at the gate, so cash and photo identification are needed. The park normally closes through the monsoon, roughly mid-June to mid-October, and the prime season runs November to March. From Ahmedabad it is a three to three-and-a-half hour drive, which makes an overnight in Bhavnagar or at the forest lodge a more relaxed plan than a single long day.

November to March for mild weather and the peak harrier roost. Take an afternoon drive and stay to dusk, when blackbuck are most active and the harriers stream into the grassland roost.

Accessibility

Frequently asked questions

What makes Velavadar different from other Indian national parks?

It protects open tropical grassland rather than forest, so wildlife is watched across wide flat sightlines instead of through trees. That habitat supports dense blackbuck herds, Indian wolf and an internationally important winter harrier roost.

When is Velavadar open?

The park is normally open from around mid-October to mid-June and closes during the monsoon. November to March offers the most comfortable temperatures and the fullest raptor activity at the evening roost.

Can wolves be seen at Velavadar?

Indian wolf are present and Velavadar is considered one of the better places in the country to look for them, though sightings are never guaranteed. Early morning and late afternoon drives with a park guide give the best chance.

How far is it from Ahmedabad?

About 155 km, or three to three and a half hours by road. Bhavnagar is much closer at roughly 70 km and around 75 minutes, so basing there or at accommodation near the park makes the safari timings far easier.
