One of the most important cities of the Harappan civilisation, with a well-preserved dockyard dating to around 2400 BCE.
Lothal was a busy Bronze Age port city of the Indus Valley civilisation, and its brick dockyard is one of the world's earliest known artificial docks. The excavated site sits on a low mound with a residential area, a bead-making workshop and a warehouse platform. The adjacent Archaeological Site Museum holds seals, beads, pottery and copper tools recovered from the mound. A National Maritime Heritage Complex is being built nearby. Lothal is a low-key, quiet site that rewards history enthusiasts, and a visit takes 2-3 hours including the museum.
