A UNESCO-listed medieval Gujarati capital of mosques, gateways and hill temples beneath Pavagadh hill.
Champaner-Pavagadh is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only complete and unchanged Islamic pre-Mughal city in India. Sultan Mahmud Begda captured it in 1484 and built Mahmudabad-Champaner with its Jami Masjid, Nagina Masjid, Sahar ki Masjid and the fortified citadel. The Kalika Mata temple sits at the top of Pavagadh hill and is reached by ropeway or a climb. The site is spread out, so a car is needed, and the day is long from Ahmedabad; many travellers stay in Vadodara.
