The decision that shapes a hotel stay most is location, and it is the one hardest to undo once the trip begins. A smaller room a short walk from a station or an old quarter usually serves a traveller better than a larger one on a ring road, because taxi fares and lost time accumulate quietly across a week. Work out where you expect to spend your evenings, settle on a neighbourhood, and only then compare properties within it.

Grading systems are national rather than universal. A four-star classification in one country can describe facilities another would call three, and words such as guesthouse, pension, apart-hotel and boutique carry different meanings from place to place. Read what is actually included: breakfast, city or tourist tax, parking, air conditioning, lift access, and whether reception is staffed around the clock or only for limited hours.

Most difficulties are booking difficulties rather than building ones. Non-refundable rates reward certainty and punish flexibility; a late arrival can lose a room if the property has not been told; and a street that is quiet at viewing time may not be at midnight. Note the cancellation deadline, confirm your arrival window in writing, and understand whether a card is being charged or simply held.
