Taverna Skaros

Taverna Skaros occupies the water's edge of Damouchari harbour, a small cove on the east coast of the Pelion peninsula in the Magnesia regional unit of Thessaly, Greece. Damouchari is one of east Pelion's most photographed locations: a harbour so small and enclosed that boats are moored within metres of the dining tables, and the water below the terrace is clear enough to see the seabed. The cove gained wider recognition as a filming location for the 2008 film Mamma Mia!, bringing increased visitor interest to a place that local fishermen and Pelion regulars had known for decades. Taverna Skaros serves as the primary and essentially only dining option directly at the cove. The kitchen focuses entirely on seafood, sourcing the daily catch from Pelion-based fishing boats and preparing it using the simplest methods that best express ingredient quality. Fresh grilled fish of the day — sea bream, red mullet, or whatever has been landed that morning — is cooked over charcoal and dressed only with olive oil and lemon. Seafood pasta brings together the smaller catch: prawns, mussels, and clams in a light tomato or white-wine sauce. Shrimp saganaki and grilled calamari with lemon complete a focused, seafood-only menu. The restaurant operates from May through October; Damouchari's roads become impractical in winter. Arrival via the stone footpath from Mouresi village is a pleasant alternative to the descent road and is preferred by walkers.
