Taverna Archontiko Mileon

Taverna Archontiko Mileon is a traditional stone-built restaurant in the village of Milies, in the southern Pelion peninsula of the Magnesia regional unit, Thessaly, Greece. Milies is historically one of the most significant cultural villages of Pelion, known as a centre of learning during the Ottoman period and home to the library that housed some of the peninsula's oldest manuscripts. The taverna occupies a restored archontiko — a traditional Pelion manor house — and has become closely associated with the narrow-gauge Pelion railway, the so-called Moutzouris ('Little Dirty One'), whose steam-train terminus is a short walk from the restaurant. Visitors arriving on the weekend steam-train excursion from Ano Lechonia frequently proceed directly to the taverna for lunch, making it a popular destination for domestic Greek tourism. The kitchen serves classic Pelion cuisine: spetsofai, the local sausage and Florina pepper stew, is the signature preparation and is executed in a generously portioned version that emphasises the sausage's smoky character. Pilafi, a local rice dish cooked in chicken or lamb stock with saffron, represents the Pelion tradition of celebrating rice imported historically through Volos harbour. Rooster cooked slowly in red wine sauce — a preparation with strong roots in the Greek mountain kitchen — is another fixture of the menu. Walnut cake, prepared with walnuts from Pelion orchards, provides a characteristically regional dessert. The dining room of the restored stone archontiko retains original walls and wooden beams; in summer, the garden terrace is the preferred option.
