The most iconic hike in the South Aegean, following the edge of Santorini's spectacular caldera from the capital Fira through Firostefani and Imerovigli to the clifftop village of Oia. The path offers continuous breathtaking views over the submerged volcanic caldera and the blue-domed churches of successive villages.
The Santorini Caldera Trail is one of Greece's most celebrated walks, tracing the western rim of Santorini's ancient volcanic caldera for 10.5 kilometres from the island's capital Fira to the clifftop village of Oia in the South Aegean region. The route runs almost entirely along the caldera edge, offering unbroken views over the flooded crater and the deep Aegean below.
The trail begins at the Fira bus terminal and immediately joins the caldera path heading north. The surface alternates between concrete, stone-paved alleyways through village centres, and rocky earth tracks between settlements. No permit is required, and parking is available in Fira though most hikers arrive by bus or ferry. The path is waymarked throughout with blue-and-white markers but is generally straightforward to follow.
Passing through the whitewashed suburb of Firostefani (roughly 1.5 km from the start), the trail enters Imerovigli, perched at the highest point of the caldera rim at around 300 metres elevation. From here, the path descends to the dramatic Skaros Rock — a former medieval fortification jutting over the caldera — before continuing north along the most demanding section of the walk. Between Imerovigli and Oia, the terrain becomes more rugged with some steep ascents and loose volcanic rock. Shade is minimal and the path is fully exposed to the sun.
The route passes no permanent water sources; all water must be carried from Fira. There are no refuge huts along the way. Small cafes and shops in Firostefani and Imerovigli provide the only resupply options mid-route. The final approach to Oia follows flagstone paths into the village, where the trail ends at the famous castle viewpoint.
Total elevation change is approximately 300 metres in undulating sections rather than a single sustained climb. The trail is in good condition year-round but becomes very hot and exposed in July and August. Trekking poles are useful for steep descent sections from Imerovigli. Hikers arriving in Oia can return to Fira via the frequent KTEL bus service, with a journey time of around 30 minutes.
