The summit ascent is a 7-kilometre round trip from the village of Filoti, covering approximately 540 metres of elevation gain on rocky trails that climb through scrub oak, phrygana, and open limestone terrain to a panoramic summit.
The main trailhead is located in Filoti village, reached by bus or car from Naxos Town (approximately 18 km). The path begins near the village springs and is initially paved with kalderimi stonework before transitioning to dirt and exposed limestone rock. An alternative start exists from the Zas cave car park near the Naxos-Apiranthos road — this route passes the Cave of Zeus, a natural limestone cavern associated in Greek mythology with the god's upbringing, and joins the summit ridge higher on the mountain. No permit is required for either route.
The path is marked with red-painted cairns but becomes indistinct in places on the upper ridge, particularly in poor visibility. A GPS track is strongly recommended. Total climbing time from Filoti is approximately 2 to 2.5 hours; the descent takes around 1.5 hours.
The terrain above 700 metres transitions to open limestone scree and large boulders requiring careful foot placement. The final 100 metres of the ascent involves easy scrambling on stable rock with no technical climbing required, but exposure to wind on the summit ridge can be severe and conditions change rapidly. A windproof and waterproof layer is essential. The summit is marked by a trig point and small wind shelter.
There are no water sources above Filoti and no refuge huts on the mountain. On clear days the summit panorama spans up to 25 Cycladic islands including Paros, Syros, Mykonos, Ikaria, and on exceptional days the Turkish coast. The Cave of Zeus on the south flank, approximately 30 minutes above Filoti, is a notable detour with a small stone altar and ancient inscriptions inside. Summit temperatures are significantly cooler than the coast; additional layers are advisable throughout the season.
