Platy Beach, Lemnos

Platy Beach lies five kilometres south of Myrina, the capital of Lemnos, curving around a broad, gently shelving bay. The beach is composed of fine golden-brown sand, among the best sand quality available in the North Aegean islands. The bay is relatively sheltered, with the water ranging from pale turquoise along the shallow margins to clear blue at swimming depth. The very gradual entry into the sea makes Platy one of the most family-friendly beaches in the North Aegean: young children can wade considerable distances without the water rising above their waists. The beach is moderately long — over 600 metres — and during most of the summer season rarely becomes overcrowded, retaining a spacious feel even in late July and August. Organised with sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars, showers, and toilets, Platy provides a comfortable experience without the intensity of fully commercialised resort beaches. Watersports operators offer pedalo and canoe hire, and the calm water makes conditions ideal for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. The village of Platy sits immediately behind the beach with small tavernas, accommodation studios, and a minimarket. Myrina town is five kilometres north and easily reached by taxi (approximately €7) or a 45-minute walk along the coast road. Lemnos is a relatively unvisited island in the North Aegean, and Platy Beach benefits from this: the calm pace and absence of mass tourism infrastructure are key features of the experience. The beach faces southwest and catches afternoon sunshine until late in the day, making early evening swims particularly pleasant.
