Eftalou Beach, Lesbos

Eftalou Beach occupies a quiet stretch of coastline three kilometres east of Molyvos (Mithymna) in northern Lesbos, reached by a scenic coastal track that winds above the sea. The beach is composed of smooth rounded pebbles — grey and white tones — with clear, deep-blue water and exceptional underwater visibility. The bay is partially sheltered and tends to remain calm even when a northerly meltemi is blowing at Molyvos, making it a reliable option when conditions deteriorate elsewhere. The most distinctive feature of Eftalou is the presence of natural thermal springs: geothermal activity beneath the seabed causes warm water to bubble through the pebbles along parts of the shoreline, creating localised patches of noticeably warmer water that swimmers can discover by feel. Immediately adjacent to the beach stands the Ottoman-era Eftalou thermal bathhouse, a domed stone structure that has functioned as a public bathhouse for well over a century. Entry costs approximately €5 and provides access to hot mineral baths in private stone chambers — a memorable experience that complements a sea swim. A small taverna beside the bathhouse serves simple Greek food and cold drinks throughout the day. There are no sunbed or umbrella operators at Eftalou; visitors bring their own towels or mats and spread them on the smooth pebbles. This absence of organised facilities gives the beach a peaceful, uncommercialised character that distinguishes it sharply from the more developed beaches further along the coast. The coastal walk from Molyvos takes approximately 15 minutes and is scenic in its own right. A rental scooter from Molyvos is the easiest vehicle option; parking above the beach is limited. Eftalou has a longer useful season than most Lesbos beaches, with the thermal bathhouse providing appeal even in cooler months.
