Anaxos Beach, Lesbos

Anaxos Beach extends for approximately 800 metres along the northern coast of Lesbos, roughly 60 kilometres from the island capital Mytilini and just a few kilometres south of the historic town of Molyvos (Mithymna). The beach is composed of fine to medium-grained golden sand, with a gentle slope into the sea and water that shifts from pale turquoise in the shallows to a clear cobalt blue further offshore. Three small uninhabited islets sit just offshore and provide a distinctive focal point visible from most of the beach; they also create a partial natural windbreak that helps keep the bay relatively sheltered during mild meltemi conditions. The beach is moderately developed with several sunbed and umbrella operators, beach bars, and restaurants fronting the waterfront. Showers are available at multiple points. Windsurfing is possible at Anaxos when the afternoon northerly breeze builds, and the relatively open bay creates workable conditions for intermediate riders. For calmer days, the protected inshore area near the islets provides excellent swimming. Families appreciate the sandy surface and gradual entry, while the beach's afternoon animation and nearby tavernas give it a sociable character. Anaxos village is a small resort community with rooms-to-let, studios, and accommodation oriented to the summer visitor trade. Molyvos, with its medieval Genoese castle, cobbled lanes, and broader range of restaurants, is approximately four kilometres north — well worth combining with a beach day. Rental car from Mytilini takes approximately one hour; the KTEL bus to Petra (approximately €5) followed by a short taxi covers the route without a car.
