Megalo Papingo is the larger of the two Papingo villages in north Zagori, set at roughly 950 metres altitude approximately 50 km north of Ioannina. Together with Mikro Papingo immediately to the south, the settlement is considered among the most photogenic in Greece — grey-slate-roofed stone houses built tightly along a narrow ridge overlooking the Rogovo canyon and the Timfi mountain massif. The natural rock pools of Rogovo, known locally as Kolymbithres, lie within 15 minutes' walk downhill and are among the most visited natural features in the Zagori. The northern trailhead for Vikos Gorge is accessible from the village, and the multi-day Timfi ridge traverse with its alpine Drakolimni lake circuit begins from the upper reaches of the same access road.

Papaevangelou Hotel is a longstanding property in Megalo Papingo, operating for several decades and regarded as one of the most dependable bases in the Zagori cluster. The building is constructed in the local stone-and-slate vernacular with a mountain chalet interior — heavy timber furnishings, stone fireplaces in communal areas, and a warm colour palette suited to the mountain climate.
