Kalderimi Guesthouse

Kalderimi Guesthouse takes its name from the traditional cobbled mule paths — kalderimia — that connect the villages of Zagori, and it sits in Mikro Papingo, the smaller and quieter of the two Papingo settlements, at roughly 1,000 metres elevation in the northern Zagori uplands. The guesthouse lies approximately 65 kilometres from Ioannina and is positioned at the foot of the Astraka massif, making it the closest accommodation to the route up toward Drakolimni alpine lake and the Astraka mountain refuge.

The building follows strict Zagorian vernacular: grey limestone exterior, thick walls that retain warmth through cold mountain months, and interior rooms with exposed stone, wooden floors, and traditional hand-woven textiles. Double and twin rooms offer a homely atmosphere with simple but solid furnishings; studio apartments provide a small kitchenette for longer stays or self-catering hikers who want to prepare their own evening meal.

Breakfast is included in all room rates and features local honey, fresh bread from the village, regional cheeses from nearby Zagori producers, and homemade fruit preserves. Packed lunches can be arranged on request for guests setting out on full-day hikes. The guesthouse does not serve dinner, but Megalo Papingo — a 10-minute walk — has several tavernas open through the season. A fireplace in the common sitting area burns through cooler evenings and provides a communal space for hikers to compare notes on trail conditions.

Wi-Fi is available throughout. The hosts are knowledgeable about trail conditions, including the ascent to Drakolimni and the descent into the Vikos Gorge from Mikro Papingo. The guesthouse is best suited to couples, pairs of hikers, or small families who want direct access to northern Zagori's mountains without the facilities or pricing of a larger resort.
