Sylt from the Mainland

Sylt, Germany's northernmost North Sea island, is reached from Hamburg either by a direct Deutsche Bahn train of about 2 hours to Westerland, or by driving to Niebuell (about 210 km from Hamburg) and loading the car onto the DB Sylt Shuttle or RDC Autozug car train, which crosses the Hindenburgdamm causeway to Westerland in about 35 minutes. Foot passengers and cyclists can also take the direct train the entire way. Westerland is the island's main town, with a promenade, the Sansibar-style beach bars nearby, and a pedestrian shopping street; the town's beach is backed by a row of wicker Strandkorb beach chairs available to rent by the day. A typical day starts with the morning train or car train crossing, followed by time on the beach or a walk along the promenade, before moving on to the smaller villages of Kampen, known for its dunes and upscale beach clubs, or List, at the island's northern tip near the Ellenbogen peninsula and its lighthouses. Food stops along the way include fish restaurants in Westerland's harbor area and beach kiosks selling Sylter fish rolls; List and Kampen both have cafes suited to an afternoon break. Visitors interested in nature can walk sections of the Wadden Sea mudflats, a UNESCO World Heritage site, particularly around Munkmarsch or List, where guided Wattwandern walks are offered seasonally. Because Sylt is a large island with attractions spread across Westerland, Kampen, and List, a full day trip involves several hours of walking or cycling between the dunes, beaches, and villages, especially if visitors combine a beach visit with a trip to the Ellenbogen. Beach season runs May through September, but the dune landscapes and Wadden Sea walks are worthwhile year-round, and the island's Hindenburgdamm crossing and long stretches of open dune paths make this a moderately demanding day out rather than a purely leisurely one.
