Helgoland Island from the Mainland

Helgoland is a small North Sea archipelago about 60 km off the mainland coast, reached from Cuxhaven (itself accessible from Hamburg by regional train) by the FRS Halunder Jet catamaran in about 75 minutes during the late-March-to-early-November season, or year-round by the slower Cassen Eils MS Helgoland ferry in about 2.5 hours. Seasonal sailings also run from Hamburg's Landungsbruecken and from Buesum. Helgoland is administratively part of Schleswig-Holstein's Pinneberg district despite its distance offshore. Arriving visitors land on the main island (Hauptinsel), a red sandstone rock with a small harbor town, and can walk or take a short ferry shuttle to Duene, the adjacent sand-dune islet known for its seal colonies. A typical day starts with the Hauptinsel's Oberland, the upper plateau reached by stairs or the Aufzug lift, offering cliff-top views and access to the Lange Anna sea stack, the island's best-known landmark. The Unterland, the lower harbor town, is known for duty-free shopping, since Helgoland sits outside the EU customs union, and for fresh seafood restaurants serving crab and fish specialties. Afternoons suit a walk or short boat trip to Duene to see the grey and harbor seal colonies hauled out on the sandbanks, particularly numerous in late autumn during pupping season. Because the island combines cliff-top stairs, the Oberland walking loop, and a crossing to Duene, a full visit involves a few hours of walking over uneven and elevated terrain, making it more demanding than a flat town walk. The catamaran and ferry both run at full frequency from April through October, which is the most reliable season for a day trip, while winter sailings are more limited and weather-dependent.
