Flensburg and the Danish Border

Flensburg lies 90 km north of Kiel, close to the Danish border, and is reached by a direct Deutsche Bahn Regionalexpress in about 1 hour 15 minutes from Kiel Hauptbahnhof, or about 2 hours from Hamburg. The city's old town, the Nordermarkt and Suedermarkt squares, and the pedestrianized Grosse Strasse make for an easy morning walk past merchant houses tied to Flensburg's rum-trading history, with the Flensburg Schifffahrtsmuseum on the harbor covering that maritime past in detail. A visit to a rum distillery or the Rum-Manufaktur shop rounds out the theme for visitors interested in the city's centuries-old trade links to the Caribbean. From the old town, the harbor promenade along the Flensburg Fjord offers views across to the Danish shore, with seasonal boat trips available in summer. In the afternoon, local buses continue from Flensburg to Harrislee and across the nearby Danish border, where visitors can see the shift from German to Danish signage, architecture, and shops within a few kilometers, or continue toward Danish towns such as Sonderborg or Krusaa by car via the A7 motorway. Food stops in Flensburg's old town include harborside fish restaurants and traditional German bakeries around the Nordermarkt. The city and border crossing are worth visiting year-round, with summer adding the option of fjord boat trips and a swim at Wassersleben beach just north of the city center. Flensburg's compact old town and flat harbor promenade mean the day's walking stays light, making this one of the least physically demanding day trips from Kiel.
