Amrum and Foehr from Dagebuell

Amrum and Foehr are North Frisian Islands reached from the mainland via Dagebuell Mole, itself accessible from Husum by a 45-minute regional train ride. From Dagebuell, W.D.R. passenger and vehicle ferries cross to Wyk auf Foehr in 40-50 minutes or to Wittduen on Amrum in 90-120 minutes, either direct or via Foehr. A day trip typically focuses on one island rather than both, given the ferry timings. Wyk auf Foehr has a promenade, a sandy beach, and a small town center with North Frisian architecture and cafes, making it an easy island to explore on foot within a few hours. Amrum's main draw is the Kniepsand, an enormous sandbank beach on the island's western side that is among the widest in the North Sea, reached from Wittduen or Norddorf by a walk through low dunes; the island also has a historic lighthouse near Norddorf offering views over the dunes and sandbank. A morning ferry to either island leaves time for a walk through the town or village, a stretch of beach time on the Kniepsand or Foehr's shore, and lunch at a harborside restaurant serving North Sea fish specialties before the return crossing. Vehicle space on the ferries is limited in summer, so visitors bringing a car should book well ahead; foot passengers and cyclists have more flexibility. Both islands are most popular from May through September for beach time, especially for Amrum's Kniepsand sandbank, though the dune landscapes and birdlife along the Wadden Sea coast are worth a visit outside peak season as well. Because reaching Amrum in particular involves a longer ferry crossing plus a dune walk to the Kniepsand, this trip involves more time and walking than a typical mainland day trip.
