Bergwerk Reden (Erlebnisort Reden)

Bergwerk Reden, also known as Erlebnisort Reden, occupies the site of a former coal mine that operated from 1846 until its closure in 1995, one of the collieries that anchored Saarland's coal-mining economy for a century and a half. The site preserves its historic winding towers, the steel structures that once hauled miners and coal to the surface, now standing as landmarks over the redeveloped grounds. Rather than functioning purely as an industrial memorial, the site has been converted into a mixed heritage and leisure destination: the GONDWANA Das Praehistorium occupies part of the former mine buildings as a natural history museum focused on prehistoric life, while the surrounding grounds include the Itzenplitzer Weiher, a reclaimed water area used for recreation and walking. Visitors typically combine a walk around the winding towers and mining heritage trail with a visit to the GONDWANA museum, making a half-day outing overall; the mining heritage grounds themselves are free and open access, while the museum charges separate admission. Weekday afternoons see fewer visitors than weekends, when families with children are the main museum audience. Because the site blends open industrial-heritage grounds with a ticketed museum, opening hours vary by facility, and checking the museum's current seasonal hours before a visit is worthwhile.
