Völklinger Hütte (Völklingen Ironworks)

A former pig-iron works on the Saar river, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 as the only intact ironworks of its era preserved worldwide. Visitors can climb the blast furnace group, walk through the ore storage halls and sintering plant, and view rotating art and cultural exhibitions staged inside the industrial structures.

Saarschleife (Cloef Viewpoint)

A dramatic horseshoe-shaped bend of the Saar river near Mettlach-Orscholz, best seen from the Cloef viewing platform above the loop. It is one of the most photographed natural landmarks in Saarland and the centerpiece of the Saar-Hunsrück nature park.

Baumwipfelpfad Saarschleife (Treetop Walkway)

A 1,250-metre treetop walkway rising to 42 metres through native mixed deciduous forest above the Saarschleife, ending at a viewing tower over the river loop. The fully accessible ramp system includes educational stations about the surrounding forest and wildlife.

Saarbrücker Schloss (Saarbrücken Castle)

A former residence of the Princes of Nassau-Saarbrücken, first documented in 999 AD and rebuilt in Baroque style in the 18th century by architect Friedrich Joachim Stengel. The 1989 renovation added a modern glass-and-steel central block by architect Gottfried Böhm, and the castle now houses the Historisches Museum Saar.

Ludwigskirche

A Lutheran Baroque church built between 1762 and 1775 by Prince Ludwig of Nassau-Saarbrücken, regarded as the masterwork of architect Friedrich Joachim Stengel. Rebuilt after near-total destruction in a 1944 bombing, it is considered one of Germany's most significant Protestant churches.

St. Johanner Markt

The historic market square of the former town of St. Johann, granted town rights in 1322 and remodeled in the 18th century with a Baroque fountain designed by Friedrich Joachim Stengel. Together with the castle and Ludwigskirche it forms the so-called Stengel Triangle, and today it is a pedestrianized square lined with cafes and shops.

Getting around Saarland

Saarland is Germany's smallest area state and one of its most compact to get around. Saarbrücken Hauptbahnhof is the transport hub, with direct trains to Paris, Frankfurt, Mannheim, Trier, and across the border to Luxembourg and Metz. Within the state, the saarVV network combines DB regional trains, the Saarbahn tram-train, and local buses on a single ticket system, and the Deutschlandticket covers all of it for a flat monthly fare. A rental car pays off for rural destinations like the Saarschleife and the region's lakes, and for quick cross-border trips into France and Luxembourg, since driving distances rarely exceed 60-90 minutes to a neighboring capital.
