Ottweiler Historic Old Town (Altstadt)

Ottweiler's historic old town preserves the character of a former residential seat of the Counts of Nassau-Saarbrücken, with half-timbered houses, winding lanes and a cluster of Baroque buildings designed by court architect Friedrich Joachim Stengel, including the Pavilion and the Witwenpalais, once used as a dower residence. Among the town's most distinctive structures is the Zibbelkapp tower, a remnant of a 15th-century stronghold considered the oldest preserved wooden structure surviving in Saarland, standing as a rare timber-framed defensive relic from the medieval period. Walking the old town means following a compact network of lanes radiating from the Marktplatz, where the Baroque civic buildings sit alongside older half-timbered houses, giving a layered sense of the town's development from medieval stronghold to princely residential seat. A self-guided walk through the main streets and past the key buildings takes about ninety minutes to two hours, with weekend mornings adding extra life to the town when local markets set up around the Marktplatz.
