Süntel Hohenstein Cliffs Walk

The Süntel Hohenstein cliffs walk climbs through the Süntel hills near Bad Münder to a dramatic limestone cliff face and former quarry with a viewing platform overlooking the wooded ridge. The trail starts at the Wanderparkplatz Hohenstein, with on-site parking and a regional bus connection from Bad Münder. The route covers about 8 kilometers with 220 meters of elevation gain, following forest paths through beech woodland including stands of the gnarled, twisted-trunked Süntel-Buchen, a locally distinctive beech form found almost nowhere else. The surface is packed dirt and stone through most of the forest, becoming uneven and quarry-scarred near the Hohenstein itself, where old quarrying has left exposed rock faces and an edge that requires caution, particularly with children. A viewing platform at the top of the former quarry gives views out over the wooded Süntel ridge and surrounding countryside. Shade is near-continuous through the forested approach, with the final quarry-edge section open to sun and wind. There are no water sources or shelters along the route; hikers should carry their own supplies, with the nearest facilities back in Bad Münder. The uneven quarry terrain near the Hohenstein is best avoided in wet weather, when the exposed rock can become slippery.
