Hamelin Weser Riverside Walk

The Hamelin Weser riverside walk is a flat, easy route along the Weser river through and beyond Hamelin's historic old town, tracing the town's Pied Piper legend and Weser Renaissance architecture before opening onto quieter towpath countryside. The walk begins at the Münsterkirchhof in the old town, a 10-minute walk from Hamelin's train station, with no parking needed for the town-center start. From there the route passes half-timbered Altstadt buildings and the ornately gabled Rattenfängerhaus, or Pied Piper House, before descending to the Weser embankment and following a paved and packed-gravel towpath south along the river for roughly 9 kilometers with only about 20 meters of elevation change, making it accessible to nearly all fitness levels. The path is fully shaded in places by riverside trees and open to the sky in others, running close to the water with occasional benches and viewpoints over passing river barges and pleasure boats. There are no technical sections; the surface is level and well maintained throughout, alternating between town pavement and firm towpath gravel. Cafés and restaurants are available in the old town at the start, but once past the town's edge there are no further shops or water points until the walk either turns back or reaches the next riverside village, so hikers continuing the full distance should carry water. The route can be walked in either direction and shortened easily by turning back at any point along the towpath, since it runs as an out-and-back rather than a loop.
