Deister Ridge Walk to the Annaturm

The Deister ridge walk to the Annaturm climbs through the forested Deister hills southwest of Hannover to a historic lookout tower near the range's high point. The trail starts at the Wanderparkplatz Nienstedter Pass near Ronnenberg, reachable by regional bus from Hannover or Barsinghausen, with on-site parking at the trailhead. The route covers about 12 kilometers with 280 meters of elevation gain, climbing steadily on packed dirt forest paths through mature beech woodland typical of the Deister, with no technical difficulty but a sustained uphill grade for much of the first half. The path is shaded almost the entire way, crossing several logging tracks and minor stream drainages before reaching the ridge crest, where it follows the high ground to the Annaturm, a stone observation tower built in the 19th century. From the tower's platform, views open out over the Deister's beech canopy and across the Calenberger Land farmland to the north. There are no water sources, huts, or shelters along the route; the nearest refreshments are a seasonal forest kiosk sometimes open near the tower, otherwise hikers should carry their own supplies. A shorter turn-around option exists at the ridge crest before the final push to the tower, cutting the walk to roughly 8 kilometers round trip. The beech forest is at its most striking in late September to mid-October, when the canopy turns gold and copper before dropping its leaves.
